TOP CROPS: Start off by growing apples - the custard comes later

When planting in the ground, choose a sunny day from now until end of March when the soil is neither frozen or waterlogged. Plant at the same depth they were in the field - you can see a tide mark on the stem and spread out the roots.

Cover with compost, firm in well, adding a little more compost if it is too shallow and then cover with a mulch of compost or bark.

It's not just apples that you can grow this way - pear, plum, gage, damson and cherry are all suitable as well. If you get started now, you can enjoy beautiful blossoms in spring and hopefully some tasty fruit next autumn.
