Diocese confirms crumbling city church will be levelled

THE planned demolition of Truro’s Grade Il-listed St Paul's Church, condemned as unsafe, should go ahead, officials have decided.

In a report to the Diocese of Truro the Church Commissioners said after consultation with the Church Buildings Council it “does not appear... that the building is of such historic and archaeological interest or architectural quality that it ought to be preserved in the interests of the nation and the Church of England.”

The church in Tregolls Road was closed to worshippers in 2008 after two structural problems were discovered: subsidence, possibly relating to anearby wartime bomb explosion, and irreversible decay to the local Polyphant stone from which the tower and east end are built.

Over the succeeding years attempts to sell or find new uses for St Paul's, and calls by conservation and heritage groups to save it, have all come to nothing.
