Rage against the machines

We may be almost three decades past Judgment Day - August 29, 1997 - when the Terminator franchise proclaimed artificial intelligence would achieve self-awareness and declare war on humanity, but filmmakers continue to be fascinated with the nightmarish notion of machines rebelling against their creators.

Loosely adapted from Simon Stalenhag's illustrated novel by screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, The Electric State is a big-budget sci-fi odyssey set in an alternative 1990s when robots have staged an uprising against human masters, demanding equality through their spokesperson, Mr Peanut (voiced by Woody Harrelson).
