UN chief warns Israel over attack on peacekeepers in Lebanon

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Oct 11 warned Israel that there must be no repeat of an "intolerable" incident in which its forces fired on peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, wounding two.

The incident, in which Israel said it was targeting Hezbollah militants near UN posts, was the third day in a row that peacekeepers have reported Israeli fire at their positions, and drew condemnation from a number of world leaders and governments on Oct 11.

"There was naturally a reaction from many sides in solidarity with the peacekeepers that were wounded and in telling Israel very clearly that this incident is intolerable and cannot be repeated," Mr Guterres said after talks with South-east Asian leaders at a summit in Laos.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said on Oct 11 that the two UN peacekeepers who were injured were Indonesian, and called the attack a violation of international law. She added that the two peacekeepers had sustained light injuries and were in hospital for further observation.
