Trump deserves Nobel Prize if he can stop Chinese military aggression against Taiwan: Lai

He says US President should pay close attention to Chinese counterpart's actions
-
US President Donald Trump should get the Nobel Peace Prize should he be able to convince Chinese President Xi Jinping to abandon the use of force against Taiwan, President Lai Ching-te told a conservative US radio show and podcast in an interview.
The US is Chinese-claimed Taiwan's most important international backer, despite the absence of formal ties.
However, since Mr Trump took office earlier in 2025, his government has yet to announce any new arms sales to the island.
Mr Trump could meet Mr Xi at a meeting of Asia-Pacific leaders in South Korea later in October.
Mr Lai, speaking this week on The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show, which is carried on more than 400 talk radio stations, referred to comments Mr Trump made in August in which he said Mr Xi told him China would not invade Taiwan while he was US president.
"We hope to continue receiving President Trump's support. Should President Trump persuade Xi Jinping to permanently abandon any military aggression against Taiwan, President Trump would undoubtedly be a Nobel Peace Prize laureate," Mr Lai said.
