One of the first mentions of refrigerators was in a shopping advertisement. On Feb 26, 1884, department store John Little proudly announced the arrival of "Kent's refrigerators" among its "new goods," alongside card tables and a billiard room liqueur table in its furniture section. While the science behind it was not explained, it most certainly did not run on electricity.

The first electric refrigerators for home and domestic use were invented only in 1913. They had reached Singapore by 1927, as an early ad for an electric refrigerator was published on Page 12 of the July 23 edition of The Straits Times that year, promising a device that "makes ice, ice cream (and) keeps food and drink fresh" and "never wants repair."
