Kicking a sugar addiction: Jammy's

There was a time when Ms Jermaine Tan needed sugar constantly. There would be four packets of sugar in her coffee. She drank bubble tea with 120 per cent sugar.

The 31-year-old says: "It was an addiction because I could not stop having it. Bubble tea, bread, cakes. It started in secondary school and got worse in university. I was feeding on it for energy. I felt tired all the time and my skin was dull."

It was only when she read a feature on sugar addiction about 10 years ago that she decided to kick the habit.

"The next day, I told the barista to put 3½ packets of sugar in the coffee," she says. "It took me a year. It helped that I didn't go from 100 to 0. I set myself realistic targets."

Today, she runs her snack brand Jammy's with her sister Jacelyn, 29. They sell vegan and keto-friendly snacks - gelato in flavours such as Strawberry and Very Black Sesame (priced from $6.80 for a 110ml tub), gummy bears in flavours such as Peach and Sour Grape (from $5.50 for a 50g pack), granola in variations such as Sweet Cinnamon Cashew & Pecan (from $5 for a 45g snack pack), and cookies in flavours such as Coffee Hazelnut and Pandan Coconut Cashew ($7.90 for a 65g pack).

With the range, the sisters say they want to show people that healthy food can also taste good.
