Adeyemi hat-trick helps sour Celtic's 'acid test'

DORTMUND – A first-half hat-trick by Borussia Dortmund's Karim Adeyemi helped the German side to a 7-1 hammering of a "spooked" Celtic side in the Champions League on Oct 1, with five goals in the opening 42 minutes.

Adeyemi hat-trick helps sour Celtic's 'acid test'

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers had likened the match to an "acid test" for his side, who had won all nine of their previous games this season, including a 5-1 trouncing of Slovan Bratislava in their opening Champions League tie.

But the acid test turned sour pretty quickly. After both teams' fans had sung their shared anthem You'll Never Walk Alone, Celtic were very much on their own at the Westfalenstadion as last season's beaten finalists ran riot.

Adeyemi, 22, became the first Dortmund player to score a first-half hat-trick in Europe since 2002, while Emre Can and Serhou Guirassy both converted from the spot for a 5-1 half-time lead, with Daizen Maeda replying for the Scottish side.

Guirassy scored a second after the break, before substitute Felix Nmecha completed the rout.
