Optimistic
The Statesman
|December 11, 2024
SIR, Apropos your editorial "UN must act" published today, it is overly optimistic to assume that the UN will act decisively on any issue, let alone matters in Bangladesh.
-
The UN was established with the noble purpose of saving future generations from the scourge of war. However, looking at the state of the world today, it seems to have failed spectacularly in fulfilling its founding mission.
UN has failed to prevent every major conflict since 2019 from the Russia-Ukraine war to Israel-Palestine. India, the only country left out of the equation, was seemingly on the brink of war with China. Fortunately, de-escalation done by our foreign affairs ministry might have saved the day for now.
The fact that despite India being a major military power and the representative of 1.3 billion people is not a permanent member of the UN Security Council makes us question its integrity.
