In 2014, PM Narendra Modi announced the establishment of a National Sports University in Manipur, recognising the state's remarkable sporting talent, including over a dozen Olympians and multiple medalists, despite its small size.
The location of the site took some time, as the Congress State Government then in power dabbled with different options. Then the Meitei Village of Koutruk came forward and donated 350 acres of their village land in the foothills of the Imphal Valley.
