Chief minister announces ₹5 lakh relief, jobs as 'man-made flood' relief

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday described the north Bengal calamity as a “man-made flood,” announcing Rs 5 lakh compensation and a home guard job for the kin of those who lost their lives in the Darjeeling district's disaster.
Speaking to reporters at the NSCBI, Kolkata airport before leaving for north Bengal, Ms Banerjee squarely blamed the release of excess water from Bhutan and the DVC dams at Maithon and Panchet for aggravating the situation. “This is not only a natural disaster. There has been excessive rainfall nearly 300 mm in 12 hours but also a man-made flood caused by sudden water release. Where will all this water go? We already bear the brunt of water flowing from Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. How much more can Bengal endure?” she said.
