Tradition beyond borders

When we think of Durga Puja, the first image that comes to mind is of Kolkata's streets glowing with twinkling lights, pandals overflowing with people, and the thick air filled with the aroma of street foods and the beats of dhak.
Families gather, friends reunite and everyday worries dissolve into laughter, prayers and shared joy to celebrate these five days. But for many Bengalis living abroad, this annual ritual of homecoming feels like a distant dream. As work and life commitments take them across borders, their cultural roots face the threat of slowly fading away. Indian children born in distant lands sometimes grow up without knowing the richness of their own heritage.
It was this longing for identity that gave birth to Agomoni Netherlands. Founded in 2023 in Hoofddorp, a town near Amsterdam, this community evolved into a platform where no one misses out on the warmth of their rich culture and traditions.
"The inspiration came from a shared longing among Bengali families in the Netherlands to recreate the warmth and vibrancy of Durga Puja," Akash Bandyopadhyay, founding member of the community, told The Statesman, adding, "In 2023, we hosted our first Puja in Hoofddorp to promote Indian cultural legacies through annual socio-cultural activities. It was a way to bring people together and preserve traditions far from home."
Durga Puja in Kolkata is nothing short of a spectacle. From massive theme-based pandals to artistic idols, from endless food stalls to nightlong pandal hopping, the city lives the festival. In contrast, Hoofddorp's puja is intimate, driven by community spirit rather than scale. "We may not have sprawling pandals or massive crowds, but we have heartfelt performances, homemade food, and a strong sense of togetherness," Bandyopadhyay said.
At the center of it all stands the Durga idol that carries a one-of-a-kind story of continuity and shared devotion.
