On his birth anniversary, remembering Dr William Carey and his love for Bengal & the Bengali language

The Serampore-Johnnagar Baptist Mission Church solemnly celebrated the 264th birth anniversary of Rev. Dr William Carey, one of the founders of Serampore College and widely regarded as the father of the modern missionary movement.

The Serampore-Johnnagar Baptist Mission Church solemnly celebrated the 264th birth anniversary of Rev. Dr William Carey, one of the founders of Serampore College and widely regarded as the father of the modern missionary movement. A British Baptist missionary, Bible translator, botanist, and social reformer, Dr Carey's legacy was honoured through the observance of Carey Day, which serves to reflect upon his contributions to social reform and his deep affection for Bengal and the Bengali language.

Born on 17 August 1761 in England, Dr Carey arrived in Kolkata on 10 November 1793. From that moment until his death on 9 June 1834, his love for Bengal and the Bangla language remained unwavering. His work Kothopokothon was the first printed book in colloquial Bengali prose.
