- ROUSHAN CHATTERJEE

Hidden beneath layers of myths and misconceptions, this virus is often underestimated—but its impact is far from trivial. To raise awareness about this growing concern, the Serum Institute of India (SII) organized a nationwide campaign with a recent conference held in Kolkata as part of the initiative.

The session focused on how HPV is not only responsible for cervical cancer but is also associated with several other cancers. It emphasized the importance of early intervention and prevention as well.

A panel consisting of Dr. Pallab Chattopadhyay, consultant pediatrician, Apollo Multispecialty Hospital; Dr. Abhijit Sarkar, president IAP Howrah branch, 2025-26, and senior pediatric consultant, Narayana Superspeciality Hospital; Dr. Dipanwita Banerjee, consultant, gynecological cancer surgeon, Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute; alongside Dr. Basab Mukherjee, consultant gynecologist & laparoscopic surgeon, Calcutta Medical Research Institute, Columbia Asia Hospital; Dr. Dibyendu Banerjee, head of the department of G&O, at Charnock Hospital; and Dr. Jaydeep Choudhury, professor, department of pediatrics, Institute of Child, engaged in an insightful discussion focusing on the public health implications of HPV.
