Who's accountable for Cape Town's 'Tent City'?

The Star

IT'S EASY to look away from places like Wingfield, Western Cape. Easy to pass the tents and the makeshift shelters. Easy to think the people living there are someone else's problem. But nobody chooses this unless they've run out of options.

The City of Cape Town is now asking the courts for an eviction order for what's become known as 'Tent City' in Bellville.

This comes after years of talks, failed plans, and attempts to move people elsewhere. Some have accepted help and others have stayed, refusing to leave the only place they've had any sense of control.

Now, the courts are being asked to decide what happens next.
