Yates has been impressed with Port Vale manager Jon Brady so far - but warned he needs to refresh his squad this month. The former Valiants defender believes the squad is far too big and that there are not enough first-team starters, with too many having underperformed this season in his view.

Speaking to BBC Radio Stoke Yates said: “He [Brady] is going to have to get some out to get some in. I’m not a huge fan of the recruitment or even the number of players that the club has.

“It’s imbalanced. There’s too many passengers. There's too many squad players and not first XI players.

“It will be interesting to see how many players in Vale’s squad would get into many other League One starting XIs or even squads.

“I don't think there would be a huge amount”

Yates believes three new recruits would be ideal and added: “He needs a centre-half and a centre-forward who will play more than the others have done, apart from Devante Cole and I think he wants a winger.

“I know people will say we had Ronan Curtis and he’s gone and set up two or three on his debut at Plymouth, But for me, he didn’t do anywhere near enough, Ronan.
