Parry predicts more robust future for EFL members

Parry, with a new, more stable future for clubs such as Stoke City and Port Vale.

ENGLISH football is on the brink of its most significant shakeup in decades, believes EFL chairman Rick Parry.

The passage of the Football Governance Act into law has been described as a “watershed moment” by Parry, who says the legislation lays the groundwork for a complete transformation in how the game is run from top to bottom.

“Our purpose is to make all clubs sustainable,” said Parry, “enabling them to rise and fall through the pyramid without the threat of financial catastrophe.”

The catalyst for change was a furious reaction to a proposed breakaway European super league while other clubs collapsed - including Bury and Macclesfield Town, while others such as Derby County and Bolton Wanderers went to the brink.

There have also been widespread concerns that the financial gap between the Premier League and the rest of the pyramid had become dangerous and unfair.
