£5.5m rocketing cost of transforming railway station

THE multi-million pound cost of transforming a town’s railway station is rocketing.

Newcastle Borough Council has been awarded £3.8 million of Levelling Up money for a new car park, station forecourt, and extended station building at Kidsgrove Station.

But ground investigation work is still to be carried out - and the project could cost £5.5 million.

Now Kidsgrove Town Deal Board must decide whether to press ahead with a potentially reduced scheme or spend the money elsewhere. The money must be spent by 2027.
