In what appeared to be the first since his arrest in March, the legal team of detained former president Rodrigo Duterte has officially put on record the position that he did not commit any crime that would warrant his prosecution before the International Criminal Court (ICC).
"For the sake of clarity and the historical record, Mr. Duterte did not commit any criminal offense," Duterte's lawyer Nicholas Kaufman said in a recent filing before the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber I. "Mr. Duterte served his city and country, faithfully and with pride, for many years."
The statement was part of a three-page filing dated Aug. 22, where the defense outlined their timeline for Duterte's confirmation of charges hearing on Sept. 23.
