Moratorium on molasses imports set until year-end

The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) has ordered a moratorium on the importation of molasses until the end of the year, citing oversupply and falling domestic prices of the commodity.

Molasses, made from sugarcane, is commonly used for animal feed and biofuel production.

The directive, issued under Molasses Order 1 (Series of 2025 to 2026), noted that imports for crop year 2024 to 2025 have already climbed to 853,285 metric tons (MT) as of Aug. 31.

This is 28 percent higher than the average annual volume recorded from 2021 to 2024.
