FOR MORE THAN A DECADE, "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho's (KMJS) Gabi ng Lagim" (GNL) has been the most watched Halloween special on TV.
From ghost stories to supernatural beings, urban legends and demonic possessions, it has showcased real people's paranormal encounters, supported by facts and investigations.
From the TV screens that defined viewers' Halloween nights to the big screen, where Filipino stories become cinematic nightmares, "KMJS' Gabi ng Lagim The Movie" transforms real-life events and horrors into an unforgettable big-screen experience.
Now showing in cinemas, it features three hair-raising stories. Miguel Tanfelix banners "Pochong," where a cadet seafarer's first voyage turns terrifying when he encounters some hauntings aboard his ship.
Sanya Lopez and Elijah Canlas headline "Berbalang." When a freshly murdered body is stolen from the town morgue, the police chief thinks he's dealing with one of the townspeople -until whispers of a flesh-eating creature known as the berbalang surface.
The third episode is "Sanib," starring Jillian Ward, where a young girl becomes possessed by an unspeakable evil. It delves into the thin line between faith and fear, exploring what it truly means to face evil in all its forms.
I am such a scaredy cat, but because "KMJS" is my fave show, I attended the premiere of "GNL." The film captures the signature "KMJS" formula. Its anthology structure keeps the movie fast-paced. "GNL" is giving classic Pinoy horror vibes. It feels like "KMJS" saying: Let's creep the nation out but make it HD.
Here's my chat with Jessica and some of the stars of "GNL":
Among the three episodes, which one scared you the most?
Jessica Soho: "Sanib. Because I interviewed an exorcist Catholic priest and he told me all there is to know about exorcism. So, the fact that it's real makes it really scary.
"But so too are 'Berbalang' (there are books written about it by foreigners who had visited the Philippines in the past) and "Pochong." Please share any eerie experience you had while shooting.
