DOE wants gencos to triple fund contribution to LGU hosts

Power producers face a potential 200-percent surge in mandatory contributions to their host communities as the Department of Energy seeks to restructure the financial benefit scheme.
Under a DOE draft circular, generation companies (gencos) and energy resource developers will be required to allocate P0.03 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of their electricity sales as financial benefits.
This represents a threefold increase from the current P0.01 per kWh contribution required to be allocated for communities and local government units (LGUs) hosting power projects.
Once implemented, gencos will need to set aside P300,000 for every 10 million kWh of electricity sold, tripling the P100,000 contribution under the current scheme.
