DENR: 2,000 species in Phl face extinction

About 2,000 Philippine species are facing extinction unless the government implements a program to protect critically endangered species, Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga said.

"We have over 52,000 species, about half of which are not found anywhere else in the world. Sadly, around 2,000 are either critically endangered or threatened or vulnerable," Loyzaga said.

"We do have a responsibility to eliminate what we would call the possibility of extinction of these species, and therefore a very pointed program is necessary in order to protect the species that are critically endangered in the country."
