DA to Build More Rice Mills

The Department of Agriculture (DA) plans to build more rice mills nationwide, setting a higher utilization target even as concerns persist that the industry could face overcapacity.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. announced this policy direction as the DA expands large-scale rice processing systems through the Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PhilMech).
"More important than rated milling capacity is capacity utilization," Tiu Laurel said. "To break even, operators need at least 63 percent capacity usage. Go below that, and you're losing money."
