“Death Row on Shaky Grounds”: SC acquits man after 11 years, Slams botched trial

In a scathing indictment of the criminal justice system, the Supreme Court has acquitted a man who had spent 11 years behind bars and was sentenced to death for allegedly murdering six members of his family, including three children, in Phagwara, Punjab, in 2014.

The top court criticised the lower courts and prosecution for sending the man to the gallows without credible evidence. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Karol, and Sandeep Mehta said the conviction was based on contradictory witness statements and flawed assumptions.
