GCC decision to privatise nine football turfs invites brickbats

DESPITE facing flak from party councillors, including those from the CPM, CPI, AIADMK and VCK, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) passed a resolution during the council meeting on Tuesday at Ripon Buildings, to privatise artificial football turfs in nine locations across the city.

Following the announcement, the football turfs, which were free for use until now, will collect service charges of ₹120 per hour for individual players and ₹1,200 per hour for teams (5+5). The GCC said that the decision was taken to alleviate the corporation's financial burden and in adherence to a fixed revenue-sharing agreement.
