Centre 'concerned' as 1 in 5 girls gets married before reaching 18 yrs of age

ONE in five girls in India is married before reaching the legal age of 18, said Women and Child Development (WCD) Minister Annapurna Devi on Wednesday, as she launched an initiative that would focus on seven high-burden states where child marriages are widely prevalent.
Highlighting that child marriage is a significant challenge before India, the minister said about two lakh child marriages were prevented in the past year. Devi launched the 'Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat' campaign and urged all the states and Union territories to create specific action plans aimed at reducing child marriage rates to below 5% by 2029.
