While some people focus on the destination, others take joy in the journey. When you think of yourself as a tourist, you focus more on the destination and things you would do once you get there. However, if you are a traveller, you will relish the whole journey. For you, travel is a state of mind rather than just a destination. It involves patience and tolerance.

If we put that analogy to the world of investing, you need the temperament of a traveller, not that of a tourist. You need to take an active role in the investment journey and stay patient throughout. If that means learning new skills or concepts every day, so be it.

Investing is not meant for instant gratification. It requires you to absorb the surroundings and wait. There will be times when your temperament is tested. Legendary American investor Warren Buffett describes investing as the transfer of wealth from the impatient to the patient. Markets tend to penalise the tourists and reward the travellers.
