Centre's Ambitious Jal Jeevan Mission Has Failed, Alleges MP

Says although 80% of houses have piped water connection, only 62% are fully functional

DR Prabha Mallikarjun, Member of Parliament, said on Friday that the flagship programme of providing tap water to each village household in the country is a failure.

Addressing the Parliament she said that even though the Central Government claims that 80% of households have piped water connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission, only 62% are fully functional. They are getting 55 litres of water per day.

The budget for the 'Jal Jeevan' project was cut by 67.7% in the 2024-25 financial year, and the decrease in grants indicates the scheme's failure, said Davanagere MP.

Speaking about the grant provided by the Jal Shakti Ministry for the Jal Jeevan Mission, a central government scheme, during the Question Hour of the Parliament session, the MP said that under the 'Atal Bhujal Yojana', the Central Government claims that the water situation in 8,000 water-deprived panchayats has improved. But, only 37% of the water-scarce areas were covered, and only 57% of the budget was used under this scheme, she explained.
