Majority of reservoirs built without knowledge of geology, says Prof

VIDYAVARDHAKA College of Engineering professor S K Prasad said that a majority of dams have been built across the country without considering the geology of the area.

Speaking after inaugurating a two-day workshop on 'Total station and its applications', organised by the Department of Earth Science, University of Mysore on the Manasagangotri campus on Monday, Prasad said that many dams have been built across the world. "There are masonry dams and earthen dams, but the majority of dams are built without the knowledge of geology. The people who built those infrastructures didn't bother to understand the geology of the place. I am not sure whether these dams remain stable is questionable. When we are talking of global warming, we don't know there could be some natural disaster which can affect these dams. The Koyna dam is one such example which was built in Maharashtra in the 1960s. After it was built, there were many earthquakes in the region. It is called reservoir-induced earthquakes.
