Bridging the Gap
The New Indian Express Mysuru
|May 20, 2025
At the heart of North Karnataka's educational woes is a profound regional disparity, especially within the Kalyana Karnataka division.
-
Despite numerous efforts to uplift this part of the state, it remains considerably behind in key educational metrics compared to other regions.
Low Literacy Rates: As of the 2011 Census, Kalyana Karnataka's literacy rate stood at just 63.71%, far lower than the state average of 75.36%. This gap has been difficult to close and continues to impact the region's educational outcomes.
School Enrollment and Teacher Vacancies: In 2023-24, the region reported concerning enrollment numbers, with 115 government schools having no students and 241 schools with fewer than 10 students. The situation is further compounded by a massive teacher shortage, with 14,139 vacancies and over 11.65% of schools operating with a single teacher—almost double the state average. This shortage limits educational access and creates a highly strained learning environment.
Infrastructure Gaps: Many schools in North Karnataka lack basic facilities such as classrooms, sanitation, and drinking water, exacerbated by the region's historical socioeconomic challenges. Inadequate infrastructure hampers both learning and student retention.
The Reality of Learning Outcomes: An Uphill Struggle Recent findings from the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2024 further highlight the depth of the region's educational challenges.
Struggles in Early Grades: The report paints a grim picture for foundational literacy and numeracy. Among first-grade students, 32.7% are unable to recognise letters, while nearly 40% can identify letters but not words. In fifth grade, only 34% of students can read at the level expected of a second grader.
Rural Disadvantages: With rural schools making up a large portion of North Karnataka's education system, absenteeism, lack of parental support, and a significant digital divide have created barriers to learning. In these schools, students often face steep challenges in mastering basic skills like reading, writing, and arithmetic.
