Effective radiation protection would support sustainable nuclear energy development, says Dinesh Kumar Shukla
CHAIRMAN of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) Dinesh Kumar Shukla advised the stakeholders working in the radiation protection field to consider developing a national registry for radiation exposure in the medical field.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 35th IARP Conference (IARP-NC-2025) on 'Radiation Protection for Sustainable Nuclear Energy: Adapting to Climate and Technological Changes', organised by Mangalore University, in association with the Indian Association for Radiation Physics (IARP) here on Wednesday, Shukla said there are radiation exposure dose limits for occupational workers in nuclear plants, those operating CT machines, X-ray machines, and others, and their exposure dose is monitored. There is a dose limit for the public, which is much lower. The National Occupational Dose Registry System (NODRS) maintains and updates annual and lifetime dose data of all monitored radiation workers. The scope of NODRS needs to be expanded to cover all, he said.
