TWO people died, and more than 40 others were injured in an early morning stampede at the Ausaneshwar Mahadev temple in Barabanki, around 90 km from state capital Lucknow.

The incident occurred as thousands had gathered on the occasion of the third Monday of the holy month of Shravan.

According to Barabanki District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi, monkeys knocked down a high-tension wire from a pole, which fell onto a tin shed, causing an electric shock to run across the temple premises and sparking chaos and a stampede.
