Ahead of Ludhiana West bypoll, Cong candidate summoned, SSP suspended

THE run-up to the byelection to Ludhiana (West) Assembly constituency in Punjab saw a dramatic turn of events, with the AAP government suspending the Senior SP (Vigilance) of Ludhiana, Jagatpreet Singh, after he issued summons to Congress candidate and former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu in connection with an alleged ₹2,400-crore school land scam.
The allegation is that the SSP reportedly was in touch with Ashu and allegedly issued the notice to him so that it would generate voter sympathy for the candidate.
The summons issued on June 4 directed Ashu to appear for questioning on Friday. It related to an FIR registered on January 8 at Division Number 5 police station in which Ashu and others were accused of cheating, criminal breach of trust, forgery, and conspiracy.
