Rowing against time, Niranam Chundan eyes the Nehru Trophy

|August 11, 2025
AFTER missing the Nehru Trophy by mere microseconds last year, Niranam Chundan—the pride of Pathanamthitta district—is back on the waters, stronger, faster, and more determined than ever.
The district is famed for the ritualistic palliyodams that take part in the Aranmula Uthrittathi boat race and other local boat races. Niranam Chundan is the first racing Chundan Vallam from Upper Kuttanad part of Pathanamthitta—a late but formidable contender in Kerala's fiercely competitive vallamkali circuit.
With a crew of 83 seasoned rowers, the boat is now deep into rigorous training for the upcoming Nehru Trophy Boat Race, guided by coaches Sunil Kainakari and Rahul Prakash.
Last year's final was a nail-biting spectacle. The legendary Karichal Chundan clinched the trophy with a timing of 4:29.7852, while Niranam Chundan finished just behind at 4:30.56. "We missed the silver trophy by microseconds. This time, we'll bring it home," vowed Lallu, a ward member of Niranam and ardent supporter of the team.
