Meenachil river pollution posing threat to drinking-water projects

AS THE district has begun to experience sweltering summer temperatures and a decrease in water flow to rivers, the Meenachil river, one of the major sources of drinking water in the district, is facing a looming threat of severe pollution.

A study conducted by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES), a Kottayam-based environmental research institution, has found that the level of faecal coliform bacteria is several times higher than its permissible level across the river. The study was conducted by collecting water samples from 14 places from Meladukkam, the source of the Meenachil River, to Malarikkal, near the Pazukkanila Lake, its end point.
