Census Detects Slight Decrease in Bird Varieties in Pathanamthitta Wetlands

A census of Asian Water Birds conducted in the district's wetlands has revealed a slight decrease in a few species, while the total number of birds rose compared to the previous year.

The census is conducted in all the districts every year in January as part of the survey carried out in Asian countries.

While covering 10 wetlands in the district, the survey aims to understand the ecological standards of wetlands and the abundance, distribution, and movement patterns of migratory and resident birds. The recently concluded census, conducted by teams of bird watchers, bird photographers, forest department officials, and school and college students, covered various areas, including Karingali Punja.
