Unpredictable weather patterns and flooding have resulted in a drop in tourist footfall

- ABHILASH CHANDRAN @Kottayam

A breathtaking backdrop of deep blue backwaters, framed by lush green paddy fields and swaying coconut trees, has drawn visitors to Kumarakom year after year. During the monsoon season from June to August, Kumarakom transforms into a true haven for those seeking to experience the splendor of rain.

However, climate change has significantly impacted the monsoon tourism in Kumarakom, with unpredictable weather patterns and flooding severely impacting the region's tourism potential. At a time when the hospitality sector gears up to capitalize on the benefits of the southwest monsoon season, heavy rainfall and poor accessibility have disrupted tourism activities in Kumarakom this year.
