Plea on privacy of adolescents in SC on Mar 19

WHILE hearing a plea seeking enforcement of right to privacy of adolescents, the Supreme Court on Thursday noted that there are "some issues difficult for the court to resolve."

The top court listed the matter for further hearing on March 19.

"These are some of the issues very difficult for the court to resolve. When we see such matters, we realise that there are grave limitations to our power," said a two-judge bench led by Justice Abhay S Oka.

The apex court was hearing a case where a minor victim of sexual assault eloped with and married the man facing charges under POCSO Act.

During the hearing, senior advocates Madhavi Divan and Liz Mathew who were appointed as amicus curiae in the case submitted that it was a "very strong indictment of systemic failure at all levels, be it family, social, school, police and legal."

After hearing them, the Supreme Court sought their suggestions for the prevention of suffering of adolescent girls and their families and fixed the matter for further hearing to March 19.
