The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Thursday unanimously authorised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president JP Nadda to finalise a suitable candidate for the Vice-Presidential post, for which the election schedule has already been announced.
WITH the Election Commission of India (ECI) notifying the Vice-Presidential Election on Thursday, the process of filing nominations has begun. Voting is on September 9 and the result will be announced the same evening.
August 21 is the last date for filing nominations and the scrutiny of nomination papers is on August. August 25 is the last date for withdrawal.
The Election for the 17th Vice President of India was necessitated following the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar.
The Constitution of India mandates the ECI to conduct the Vice-Presidential election ""as early as possible"" in the event of a vacancy mid-term either on account of resignation or demise. The newly elected Vice President is entitled to have a full five-year term from the date he or she assumes office.
