Meningitis is a dangerous illness that can strike kids.

- DR PARTHASARATHY B

MENINGITIS is a dangerous illness that can strike kids. It occurs when the meninges, protective membrane that surround the brain and spinal cord, is inflamed. Many microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungus can cause this. Both viral and bacterial meningitis are common, but the bacterial type is more serious and can be fatal if left untreated. Knowing the symptoms of meningitis is essential for parents since prompt action can have a significant impact.

Symptoms Meningitis in children can be difficult to diagnose since its early symptoms might mimic those of the flu or other common infections. However, some symptoms ought to always be cause for concern.

• Fever: One of the earliest signs of meningitis is a sudden high fever. It often doesn't respond well to typical fever medications.

• Headache: Older children may complain of a severe headache that persists and worsens over time. Infants, however, may cry more than usual due to discomfort.
