Wooden mementos crafted in Kannur prison gains attention, earns 40k in 4 mths

IN a unique initiative aimed at transforming the lives of inmates, the Kannur central prison and correctional home is fostering creativity and artistic expression among prisoners.

With the support of Haritha Sparsham, an organisation of Kannur prison officials, inmates have begun crafting mementos under the project called 'Zero Art Carbon' using the available wood within the facility.

This creative endeavor has not only given the prisoners a productive outlet but has also marked a historic milestone. Kannur Central has become the first prison in the state to sell mementos made by inmates.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to rehabilitate prisoners by nurturing their artistic talents and providing meaningful engagement during their time in confinement.

The prison started to sell the mementos in March, which has made a revenue of around Rs. 40,000 for the government.
