AICC president and LoP in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said that to maintain ecological balance, it is necessary to have 33% forest area in the country. "Today, the country has only 25.15% forest area. In Karnataka, this figure is only 21%. The forest area in the country should increase," he said here on Saturday.
Inaugurating Vanamahotsava-2025, 'Green Path' and 'Kalaburagi Green Step' programmes, Kharge said that nature is the basis of life on earth. "No one should forget that only if there is greenery can there be breath. Man should give up his greed and grow trees and protect the environment as we have lost 20 lakh hectares of forest area due to human greed. We should not only plant saplings on the roadside but also protect them. The public should also join hands with the government," he stressed.
