SEBI chief Tuhin Kanta Pandey on Thursday said the regulator will not let commercial interest trump general public interest in deciding on the share sale plans of country's largest equity bourse, NSE.
The IPO application of the NSE, which controls over 90% of the market volume, has been pending for over eight years now as the bourse owned mostly by public sector institutions has been mired in one controversy after another.
If listed, the NSE will be the 10th most valued firm in the country as it is be valued in excess of ₹5 trillion already, according to the grey market valuation of its shares.
The NSE has been seeking Sebi nod for its IPO since 2019, and then twice in 2020, and again in 2024, and most recently in August 2024. Its rival exchange, BSE has been trading on the markets since 2017.
