Scuffle after protesters tried to break through police cordon

ACCORDING to sources, Additional Advocate General J Ravindran met Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava in Chennai on Wednesday evening and requested him to give instructions on taking up the appeal filed for urgent hearing. Subsequently, the matter was mentioned before Justice G Jayachandran heading the roster division bench of the Madras HC's Madurai Bench. The appeal will coming up for hearing on Thursday.

Meanwhile, advocates representing the petitioner argued with the police at Thiruparankundram foothills, asking them to comply with Justice Swaminathan's direction and allow the group to ascend the hill, Madurai Police Commissioner Loganathan said Section 144 had been imposed by the Collector due to the "tense situation" and an appeal had been filed in the HC against the ruling. "Since prohibitory order has been imposed, we cannot allow anyone. I am ready to face any contempt action," Loganathan told reporters.
