WITH the beginning of a new academic year, the National LP School at Mullaringadu in Idukki district is witnessing a low turnout of students — only 45 — compared to more than 90 students last year. The number of new admissions to Class 1 has also reduced considerably.

Mullaringadu panchayat, which runs the school, attributes this to the increasing wild elephant menace in the village, which has escalated in the last two years.
