SC stays defamation proceedings against Tharoor

THE Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the trial court's proceedings against veteran Congress leader Shashi Tharoor in a defamation case over his 2018 remark allegedly comparing Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a scorpion.
Tharoor, an MP from Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram, was to appear before the trial court earlier in the day in the defamation case filed by BJP leader Rajiv Babbar.
Babbar filed the case after Tharoor, at the Bangalore Literature Festival in November 2018, allegedly said that "Mr Modi is a scorpion sitting on a Shivling." A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and R Mahadevan issued notices to Babbar and Delhi Police and sought their responses in four weeks.
