SC finds DDA guilty of contempt for tree felling in Ridge, orders afforestation

The Supreme Court on Wednesday held some Delhi Development Authority (DDA) officials guilty of contempt of court for felling trees in the Ridge area to widen a road and ordered extensive afforestation.

However, the SC noted that there was no mala fide intent (on the part of DDA). The court asked the DDA officials, excluding the chairperson and vice-chairperson, responsible for felling trees without its permission to deposit a fine of ₹25,000 each. It asked the DDA to levy a suitable fee on the residents in the area who will benefit from the widened road.
