Panchayat Raj Amendment Bill Aims to Grant 42% Quota, Cleared in Assembly

TELANGANA Assembly on Sunday passed the Telangana Panchayat Raj (Third Amendment) Bill, 2025, removing the 50% ceiling on reservations in local bodies and clearing the way to provide 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in the upcoming elections.
BRS and BJP extended unconditional support to the Bill.
The legislation amends Section 285A of the Panchayat Raj Act, 2018, by adding a clause that reservations can exceed the 50% limit under exceptional circumstances. The Bill was introduced by Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Dansari Anasuya.
