Over 50% voters may not need to submit any docu in SIR, says EC

Electoral rolls from revisions between 2002 and 2008 will act as cut-off for verification

MORE than half of India’s electorate may not require providing any document as they will be covered in the electoral rolls of the last Special Intensive Revision (SIR) held in their respective states, officials in the Election Commission (EC) said on Wednesday.

Noting that most of the states had their last SIRs of the voters’ list between 2002 and 2008, they said the years would be considered the cutoff dates for the next round of the exercise. The EC will soon decide on the date to roll out pan-India SIR, as the exercise to clean up the electoral rolls across states might be taken up before the end of this year, the officials said.

According to the officials, the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) have been asked to be ready with the electoral rolls, which were published after the last SIR in their respective states. Some state CEOs have already put up the voter list published after their last SIR on their websites, they added.
